For the past seven years, I had been bi-vocational in two jobs that I loved.
In one job, I covered sports for a newspaper. Yep, that's right. People paid me to watch sports! In my other job, I got to mentor students, some of whom may have been considered "at-risk." I loved the jobs so much that it is hard to even call it work. To borrow a phrase from a movie title, It Was a Wonderful Life.
However, as much as I loved both of those jobs, I came to two realizations:
1. I needed to be home more when my family was home.
2. I had underestimated the cost of providing for five kids.
Even though I loved the jobs, I knew change was necessary. I was all set to take a state job mentoring at-risk youth when the state froze the position. Fortunately, the temp agency Adecco placed me at the nTelos in Staunton in a seasonal holiday position. As my seasonal position was all set to end, a permanent position at the store opened up. And that's my story.
